This holiday season, if you know someone who likes house plants,
DON’T
get them a houseplant. DO NOT.
instead, get them a NICE, MEDIUM-LARGE, AESTHETIC, BOTTOM-DRAINING, INDOOR
POT.
that is what they want. that is what they dream of. ok? thats what will be most useful and appreciated. in fact, if you can, get them a CUTE MATCHING SET. OF POTS!!!! NOT PLANTS, POTS!!!!!!!!
they may be more excited initially about the plant. that is true. but a pot is a gift that they will go home and use to upsize one of their already beloved houseplants, and every time they look at it they will remember how much they appreciate you.
HOUSEPLANT:
- they already have so many
- needs to be watered
- takes up window space
- comes in a pot thats already too small, needs to be upsized, costing money
- can die
AESTHETIC POT
- lets them care for an existing plant they own
- they will be grateful every time they see it in their home
- does not take up window space not already occupied by a plant
- can be wrapped without dying or spilling dirt everywhere
I HAVE NEVER HIT REBLOG SO FAST
Pro Tip: look at the sizes they currently have, and get ones just slightly larger. Repotting time WOO!
All of his experiences are shallow and empty because he’s the one having them; he can become richer than God but he will never experience even a second of contentment in all his days. And if he succeeds at making himself immortal, he’ll just be in Hell forever.
I am both in awe of their rhythm and if fear dor their ankles. *chef’s kiss*
I learned how to dance something similar to this in the third grade. in Cambodia it’s called the Pestle Dance, and it is WAY slower than this, and it is still REALLY hard to do the turny bits without getting your ankles banged up. it was my least favorite dance to learn because it hurts like a bitch when your foot gets caught. that is god-tier levels of talent.
I‘m so happy to see traditional Filipino dances being hyped up here! I grew up watching these dances everywhere and have even seen diaspora kids dance hip hop ON TOP of doing the tinikling dance 🌟🇵🇭🔥
Tinikling irog ko ❤️ this is one of those things that’s simple in theory but actually really really hard to do and these kids are amazing 🇵🇭
Dave Brandt was so much more than a meme. He partnered with universities to experiment with and expand soil conservation and cover crop techniques, worked to educate other farmers through worldwide conventions and direct mentorship, founded the Soil Health Academy, and was called the “Obi-Wan Kenobi of soil health” by the chief of the USDA’s conservation department.
There is no healthy planet without healthy ag practices, and this guy was a legend.
The A-horizon on his farm was 4 feet deep
You do not understand
Most modern Ag operations don’t even have a proper A-Horizon. They’re too busy turning the earth every time they replant. The A-horizon is the Black Gold that makes Soil Soil. It’s a structurally complex soil horizon that must be built in place by the interactions of Plants and Fungi and Insects. It is The Thing that soaks up rain and holds onto it for plants. The A-Horizon is The Thing that builds up when you let a field sit fallow. The act of tilling creates fecundity by breaking up the A-horizon. On a really good Organic no-till farm you might find an A-horizon between 3-6 inches.
His A-horizon was 4 feet deep. 50 inches.
I-
I have no context. His farm was covered in a living skin thick enough for a child to stand in.
Gives me hope for what we could accomplish if we got our collective heads on straight, you know? Like. This was one guy. A brilliant man, who knew what he was up to, but. The thing about brilliant ideas is they can be shared.
50 inches. The mind reels.
This is so much more impressive than I can understand and comprehend and I would love to know more about A horizon
Do you love the color of the Soil?
Humus, or Humic Compounds, are a cryptic and poorly understood set of organic substances. As the final metabolic result of once-living things being digested first by macroscopic organisms, and then by microorganisms, they resist most forms of analysis, and have cryptic structures. A few that we have managed to isolate and study are the Humic & Fulvic Acids.
Humus has a number of remarkable tendencies. It is capable of retaining water far better than any raw mineral clay; it also retains electrically charged clay granules, which themselves retain mineral ions, all of which is essential to make a soil a high-quality resource for Plants to grow in.
A composter is a box that contains an environment that is conducive to the production of Humus, but the best way to produce it is in-place, by laying layers of organic material down over an unbroken earth and growing things out of that. The interaction of the plants rooting, the fungus weaving itself through everything, the bacteria and archaea metabolizing as they do, and inorganic weathering forces all combine to gradually build up the microscopic equivalent of a complex megastructure capable of retaining far more water, and containing far more nutrients, than any inorganic substrate.
This stuff is black gold. This is the stuff that determines whether or not a plot of land is going to be “productive.” The knowledge of how to make it, how to care for it, is an essential piece of wisdom that our civilization needs to remember.
Fortunately, folks seem to have the right response:
Farmers are more important to the continuity of civilization than administrators, no matter what the elitists say. This knowledge is important.
Exactly
This work is so important and underappreciated AND if you’re interested in the lives of the women as wives and secretaries who did research and publication “with” their husbands in history, you should know that this kind of work in sustainable agriculture right now also has a LOT of invisible women doing critical scientific work in soil development, seed saving and starting, etc, often without formal training or recognition.
I don’t know whether or not this is true, but I’m reblogging this because we live in a world where the third search result when I tried researching the validity of this information was a link to an article about a weight loss product.
The second search result had included the slur “ob*se” in the title of the article.
There are seriously people who tell me fat people aren’t oppressed. Meanwhile, trying to find information about how to keep a fat person from drying in a car crash is met with links to products that make dirty money off of how society views my body.
I immediately gave up trying to research this.
The tiktok is correct. Basically it’s about arranging your belt so it there is an accident the pressure is in your strongest bones.
“Seatbelt should be across your hips rather than your stomach for everyone, but i think it’s more common for fat people to wear seatbelts over the stomach
Pelvic bones are strong and sturdy, and you’re going to be MUCH less likely to injure internal organs and such when you suddenly slam into a nylon belt”
I wanted to put both of these reblogs in one reblog chain since this is helpful information. Thank you both for giving more information than fatphobic Google did.
Thanks to everyone who worked on verifying this information.
Found a long Mastodon thread that makes a lot of sense, and goes a long way to explaining how we got to this point (re: conservatives shooting up the place).
Link to the complete thread in the source thing below. Tumblr won’t let me embed Mastodon links inline (probably because of the embedded @ symbol which tumblr thinks is an email address).
Before the shooter was identified, a friend who isn’t from the US heard about Charlie Kirk’s liberal professor watchlist and asked me if the shooter might be one of the professors that Kirk criticized. And I was like “Absolutely not, there’s no chance” but in the moment I didn’t know how to explain why I was so sure. I think this thread describes it, more or less.
I would sum it up as:
1. To do a shooting, you need to think that doing a shooting may possibly solve your problems
2. To do a shooting, you need to think that being A Shooter Who Maybe Solves A Problem is so important and good that it’s worth spending the rest of your life in jail
And those are cultural attitudes that some people are more likely to hold than others.
In rational choice models of terrorism, we call this method efficacy (the idea that violent acts are best for the goal) and utility maximization (the idea that the gain/goal is worth the effort/costs). These, along with self efficacy (the idea that one is capable of doing the act at all) appear not just in shootings, but in all kinds of terrorist acts!
Soo Sunny Park (b. Seoul, Korea) - Unwoven Light at Rice University’s Rice Gallery in Houston, Texas. Composed of 37 individual sculptural units, the installation uses iridescent plexi-glass embedded in pieces of a chain link fence to cast shimmering, colorful reflections across the spacious gallery.
I would like a million dollars so I can give it to this man to carve whatever he wants in wood surfaces all over my dream house and also any public buildings he feels like, please.
Writers, here’s your reminder that you should be doing warm-ups!
Athletes need to warm up. Musicians need to warm up. Artists need to warm up. Heck, I even have to play a few matches in video games before I get into a groove every day.
Warm-ups help you get into the right headspace, give you more control of your actions and word choice, get you comfortable in your physical setting (eg: with your keyboard, notebook, tablet, or whatever you’re writing with), and spark creativity.
Even if you don’t think you have spoons to write, sit down and do a couple warm-ups. If you still don’t want to, that’s alright. But. I think you’ll be surprised how often they help break that ice.
5-15 minutes is all you need. I personally set a timer for ten minutes each time and do not stop writing until the time is up. Your warm-up can be anything at all so long as it gets you writing and starts nudging those creative juices.
Here’s some common warm-ups:
Journaling. Just jot down some notes about your day. Feel free to really lean into something that you noticed. We’re going for description and details – try to avoid settling into a spiral or focusing on something negative that will upset your creativity.
Short story prompts. Type that into Pinterest and pick the most ridiculous, cliche thing you can. Write a little scene, story summary, or even a rant about why you do or don’t like the prompt. Just write.
Vocab challenge. If you like a bit more critical thinking to get you in the zone, have a random vocabulary word generator spit out five or so words. Check their meanings and jot down a little story or thought that includes all five. You get more familiar with beautiful and descriptive language, and it gives you a much narrowed prompt (which is lovely if you’re like me and suffer each time there’s an open-ended task assigned).
Character moments. Try putting your character into a generic setting and write down almost meticulously what their thought process would be. Follow them realizing they’ve just stepped in mud or dreading the start of the day. Pick a mundane thing and describe them working through it. This will not only get your writing going, but it will wake up the character’s voice in your head.
Ongoing storytelling. Did you know that Whinnie the Poo was A.A. Milne’s warm up story? He would jot down a quick little story with those very basic characters and did so every day. Whatever came to mind. He kept writing little tidbits on the same characters and eventually it turned into a series. Having that ongoing plot with isolated scenes and simple characters can help you feel more motivated to sit down and write.
Get-to-know-you-questions. Google a list of basic first-date questions (there are a million out there) and answer one yourself. Go into specifics. Where do you most want to travel and why? Let yourself ramble until the question is fully answered.
Writer’s block blues. This is a favorite of mine. If you’re truly stuck, write about being stuck. Eg: ‘I’m supposed to write for ten minutse, but that feels so stupid and impossible. No one is goign to read this anyway. I have no ideas and the page is so overwhelming when its blank. I used to be able to write on and on and nothing could stop me. it was like breathing. but now I have nothign and do nothing and I can’t even do a stupid prompt-’ Even the rambling and ranting got me writing. It made things easier. It made writing this post easier. Also – notice the typos? Yeah, don’t fix those. You’re in writing mode, not editing mode when you’re doing this. If you edit while you write, you’re forcing yourself to stay in your executive and calculating headspace rather than falling fully into creativity and dream. Ignore the mistakes. That’s for future you to handle.
I’ve officially rambled far too much, but I hope that helps even a little bit. Live well and write often, my friends. Best of luck to you <3
